(is) she (is) disappearing

composition for 2 tea kettles, 2 IR sensor blocks, voice, and electronics (written for Pamela Z )

This composition deploys Beth Lapides' experimental short prose piece, “from The disappearing act” to explore the paradox of performing disappearance. The piece uses voice and active tea kettles that are processed and played back according to live movement of IR sensors by the performer. Through manipulation of pieces from Lapides' text, the performance investigates the depersonalization/disappearance of a self through immersion in the superficial perceptions of character.

(video and images from performance of the piece by Pamela Z at the Hopkins Center for the Art in May, 2019)
